Raised in a highly musical family in Glasgow, Scotland, Roo Geddes incorporates a unique range of styles in his fiddle playing. After studying classical violin at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (BMus hons 1.1), he went on to become the first violinist to study a Jazz Masters degree in Scotland. He plays his great, great grandfather’s violin and is currently a finalist in this year’s BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year. His work spans collaborations with orchestras in the UK and Ireland, as well as with his own acclaimed ensembles ‘Roo & Neil’ and ‘Awkward Family Portraits’. As a soloist, he has toured internationally, performing concerti with orchestras and sharing the stage with artists like Rod Stewart and Dougie MacLean. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) awarded him the distinguished ‘Performance Prize for Jazz’ and the ‘John McInulty Prize for String Playing’ and his work with the Irish folk quartet Dallahan and the bluegrass ensemble The Black Denims has taken him around the globe, with recent performances in Mexico, the USA, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and Malaysia. A passionate educator, Roo is part-time lecturer in Composition and Theory at the RCS, his alma mater, as well as teaching violin and piano privately and with charities and organisations including El Sistema, Celtic Connections, Saint Leonards International Baccalaureate School. He holds a Diploma with distinction in Instrumental Teaching from the ABRSM in London and is an ambassador for the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. He is currently in the production of his debut solo album; a collection of his own arrangements and compositions spanning his upbringing in Classical and traditional Scottish music. The work features pieces composed by his late grandfather and world-renowned composer, John Maxwell Geddes, and is performed on Roo’s great, great grandfather’s violin. It will feature performances alongside his aunt, mother and grandmother and is scheduled for release in early 2025. Head over to the Bands page to find out more about Roo’s ensembles.
